As an international patient, you have different needs, goals and expectations than if you stayed at home to visit your local hospital or doctor.

Most people in the developed world increasingly enjoy excellent health because of higher living standards, superior health care earlier in life, and access to wellness programs and information.

Very few these days have direct experience with surgery or serious medical intervention. Yet they gamely choose to go abroad for medical care without knowing much about what to expect once they get to their medical destination.

In lesser developed countries, patients rarely challenge their doctor's diagnosis or treatment plan, or request respect or dignity in care. They too readily travel to another country and willingly put their care in the hands of strangers.

Medical providers are mostly unaware of the unique needs of the international patient. Medical travel agents in general do not acknowledge how exposed and vulnerable international patients are and seldom put safety mechanisms in place for them.

Once the medical travel and medical tourism industry becomes more aware and understanding of the fragile tightrope an international patient walks - alone, in most cases - and commits itself to providing the highest standards of attention to their clients, patients will be able to worry less and recover better.
