Toward standards and professionalism in medical and health travel and tourism

The workshops and courses below are offered to all who are engaged in the medical travel and tourism industry, whether as a provider who accepts patients arriving from another country, as medical travel agent who facilitates a medical traveler’s treatment and care abroad, or as any one of a number of medical travel partners who touch the patient at any point on his or her medical journey.

They are also for anyone considering entering medical and health travel and tourism as a professional or entrepreneur.

Some courses are designed to deal with specific needs that an employer, third party payer, association or pension director, or insurer would have when considering a healthcare plan involving their employees or members traveling across national borders to obtain medical treatment.

These workshops and courses have been developed by people with practical, operational knowledge and experience "touching" the international patient and medical traveler: hospital executives, physicians, nurses, medical travel facilitators, marketing specialists and entrepreneurs. They are thought leaders and business leaders of the medical travel and tourism community. Course content has been reviewed for medical accuracy and the limitations of lay people. There is no "practicing medicine without a license."

The courses are intended to provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of the complexity found within medical travel and tourism that everyone, whether patient, caregiver, or partner discovers sooner or later.

That there is no common knowledge base in this industry — yet — is not unusual. It is a young industry, being molded from two well-established industries, and taking bits and pieces from other industries.

This set of courses is the first comprehensive program covering all aspects of the medical traveler’s journey, and we expect the courses will be key to buidling a body of knowledge for the industry. For this reason, the Medical Travel and Tourism Quality Alliance has chosen these courses to be the foundation in helping set standards and raise the level of professionalism for medical travel agents and facilitators.

The following professional development workshops and seminars are offered. Please check the schedule for dates and countries where courses are being held. Most courses are eligible for CME credit.

Instructors are physicians, nurses, hospital executives, case managers, international patient managers, medical travel facilitators, and other experts as appropriate specially chosen for their medical travel and tourism industry experience and global healthcare experience.

Courses are grouped by interest and specialty, but anyone may attend any course.

These courses support the Quality Assurance program of the Medical Travel and Tourism Quality Alliance.
